ABC, CO2, foam, or clean agent? A practical guide to matching the extinguisher type to the fire risk in your space.
Using the wrong extinguisher on a fire can make it worse — water on an electrical or oil fire is a classic and dangerous mistake. The right choice depends entirely on the type of fire risk present in each area of your building.
ABC Dry Chemical Powder
The most widely mandated type for general commercial use. A single ABC extinguisher covers Class A (wood, paper, fabric), Class B (flammable liquids), and Class C (electrical) fires — making it the default for offices, malls, schools, and warehouses.
CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)
CO2 leaves no residue and is non-conductive, making it ideal near electrical panels, server rooms, and sensitive equipment where powder or water would cause secondary damage.
Foam & Clean Agent
Mechanical foam (AFFF) suits flammable-liquid hazards like fuel stores and paint booths. Clean agents such as FK-5-1-12 are the preferred choice for data centres and museums where assets are irreplaceable and zero residue is essential.
A proper fire risk assessment determines the correct type, quantity, and placement for your building. When in doubt, ask a professional rather than guessing.
